Matlin – 5 years ago today

On this date (March 17) in 2008, Marlee Matlin made her debut on Dancing with the Stars. The Oscar winner was among a dozen celebrities who signed on to compete, including pro football player Jason Taylor, Olympic skater Kristi Yamaguchi, R&B singer Mario, and actors Shannon Elizabeth, Priscilla Presley, Cristian de la Fuente, and Marissa Jaret Winokur. When Matlin was eventually voted off the show after making it through several rounds, she thanked the judges, her family and Henry Winkler for his support. She also thanked Fabian Sanchez her dance partner "for giving me the most beautiful art of dance in my life."

Marlee Matlin: ASL Skit insulting

Marlee Matlin is speaking out about a Saturday Night Live Skit (see it below on DeafNewsToday.com) in which actresses pretending to interpret for the mayor of New York and the Governor of New Jersey. Instead of funny, the Oscar winning actress says it was just "dumb". Matlin wrote, "Millions of deaf people use sign (language). Why poke fun/fake it? Poke fun at ME but not the language. Sign is not mime; it is a legit language... I don't mind fun poked at me, as I poke back. But at the language, that millions use? It feels childish and insulting. Deaf people HAVE a sense of humor... But faking signs that we use isn't the same. Imagine if a show started making fun of Spanish (using fake Spanish) or Japanese. Do you think they'd actually get away with it? Uh, no..."

Marlee Signs

A new Apple app features actress Marlee Matlin teaching users to sign. Marlee Signs shows the Academy Award winner hopes to make the fundamentals of American Sign Language easier for people interested in learning more. There is a “Slow Motion” setting for watching the videos at a slower pace and a section called “Spell” which, of course, spells out words using sign. The app is free though specialized lesson packs will cost you $3.99 each. Except for the first lesson in each pack, which is free. You'll find it here.
