Happy Birthday, Josephine Siao

Josephine Siao was born on this date (March 13, 1947) and became a teen idol during the 1960s. She was a household name for her work during the golden age of Hong Kong cinema despite losing hearing in her right ear at the age of two. Now retired and losing more of her hearing, Siao has become a writer and psychologist.

A Sign Linguistics and Deaf Education conference takes place Jan. 30 through Feb. 2nd in Hong Kong. The 3rd International Conference on Sign Linguistics and Deaf Education in Asia will be hosted by the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Chinese Film Fest

The Second Hong Kong International Film Festivals just started today the Hong Kong Arts Centre in Wanchai. One of the films is a 12-minute short called Deaf Kid Not Stupid from director Sammie Wong. Born profoundly deaf, the 22-year-old communicates in Chinese sign language, which she learned from classmates because the teachers at her deaf school in Hong Kong did not know how to sign. She will join filmmakers from more than a dozen countries at the three-day festival, which will feature 45 short films including a film about a deaf-blind Holocaust survivor and a Malaysian comedy. Deaf-owned Restaurant Opening

A new Italian restaurant is opening two weeks from Friday (Dec 9) in the Mission district of San Francisco where the conversations among the staff are all in sign language. Mozzeria Owners Melody and Russell Stein, as well as many of their employees are deaf. The daughter of hearing parents, Melody Stein attended the California School for the Deaf in Fremont, while Russ Stein grew up in New York City as part of a deaf family. They met at Gallaudet University where they studied Business Administration. Melody's father operated restaurants in Hong Kong where she was born, has studied Hospitality Management and took cooking classes in Italy last year.
