Matlin and the Oscar Curse

The Charlotte Observer got some heat from Marlee Matlin and her fans when it ran a Newsday article last week, listing Matlin among actresses who "suffered from the 'Oscar curse' of having a career meltdown after winning an Oscar." Daniel Bubbeo write in the article "Sadly, her most memorable post-Oscar performances have been in The Lip Reader, a 1993 episode of Seinfeld and on season 6 of Dancing With the Stars." The Oscar-winner shot back in a tweet "The West Wing, The L Word, Switched at Birth; my 4 Emmy nominations is hardly a "curse." Many fans added their voice to the discussion in support of the Matlin as well. Read the original story here.

Matlin Makes History

The first major American TV show to feature a deaf or hard of hearing actor in a lead role was called Reasonable Doubts. The NBC police drama ran from 1991–1993 and starred Marlee Matlin as Tess Kaufman, a prosecutor who protected the rights of the accused. In 1994, she joined the cast of Picket Fences for a couple of seasons. The Seinfeld TV show made a nod to Reasonable Doubts during an episode called The Pitch. When Jerry and George visit NBC they sit under a poster showing Mark Harmon and Marlee Matlin was on the wall of Seinfeld episode.

Marlee Talks About Switched

Marlee Matlin explains the significance of the new TV show Switched at Birth to the Wall Street Journal. She says, "“It adds a great deal of dimension to the public’s perception of what deaf people are like because you really understand  that there’s more than just a deaf person who happens to move their hands…. there’s a language, there’s a culture, there’s relationships between deaf people, deaf people and hearing people, there are obstacles, there is happiness and joy, and people are watching this all  flow into their living rooms.” Read the full story here.
