On this date (March 17) in 2003, Alabama's official state quarter, featuring Helen Keller, went on sale at the US Mint. A ceremony marked the occasion one week later at Ivy Green Estate, the birthplace of Keller in Tuscumbia. The blind and deaf Alabamian opened many doors for the disabled. The quarter design features Keller's image with her name printed in English and a reduced version of Braille, along with
a "Spirit of Courage" banner.

A one day workshop is planned in Montgomery, Alabama this coming Friday (Feb 10) concerning violence in the Deaf Community. It will provide an understanding of how to help survivors of domestic violence and its perpetrators. Domestic Violence in the Deaf Community will be held at the Alabama Public Library Service.
An attempt to stop Alabama lawmakers from moving $30 million out of the fund that pays for telephone service for the deaf and into the state's education budget has been tossed out by a judge. The Alabama Dual Party Relay Board had filed the suit, saying the action was illegal. Fifteen cents a month from landline customers goes into the Dual Party Relay Fund, which pays for relay operators.
